Objective: The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of cognitive skills in the relationship between social intelligence, cultural intelligence, and classroom engagement among second-cycle secondary school students in District 1 of Tabriz.
Method: This quantitative study was conducted within the framework of cognitive sociology using a descriptive-survey and correlational design. The statistical population consisted of 9517 students, from whom a sample of 1163 students was selected using Cochran’s formula and multistage random cluster sampling. Data were collected using the standardized Tromsø Social Intelligence Scale, the Ang and Dyne Cultural Intelligence Scale, Najati’s Cognitive Skills Questionnaire, and Reeve’s Classroom Engagement Scale. Data were analyzed using the t-test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and structural equation modeling through AMOS 23.
Results: The findings indicated that the mean scores of the main study variables were above the moderate level. Significant positive relationships were found between social intelligence, cultural intelligence, cognitive skills, and classroom engagement. Structural equation modeling showed that cognitive skills significantly mediated the effects of social intelligence and cultural intelligence on classroom engagement. Social intelligence had the strongest direct effect (β = 0.26) and indirect effect (β = 0.09) on classroom engagement, whereas the effect of cultural intelligence was primarily mediated through cognitive skills. The final model demonstrated an acceptable fit (RMSEA = 0.07; GFI = 0.91).
Conclusions: The findings suggest that classroom engagement is associated not only with students’ social and cultural competencies but also with their underlying cognitive capacities. Therefore, incorporating opportunities to develop cognitive skills alongside social and cultural competencies into curriculum planning may contribute to enhancing students’ academic and social engagement.
